Caitlin Sutherland is an independent curator and art critic based in Hamilton, ON. Currently, she is Programming Director at Hamilton Artists Inc. Her academic background is in criticism, curatorial practice, and museum studies and management from the Ontario College of Art and Design and the University of Toronto. Her most recent curatorial project, Into the Wild, featured the work of Sonny Assu, Jason Brown, Leisure, Duane Linklater, Alex McLeod, Darren Rigo, Elinor Whidden and Young and Giroux as well as select works from the permanent collections of the Art Gallery of Hamilton and Workers Arts and Heritage Centre. Sutherland has worked independently as well as with a number of contemporary arts organizations within the greater Toronto-Hamilton area for over a decade, including, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the Workers Arts and Heritage Centre, the University of Toronto Art Centre, Xpace Cultural Centre and the Art Gallery of Burlington. In addition to exhibition texts, to date, she has written for Canadian Art, Beautiful/Decay, Hamilton Arts and Letters and was the Ontario correspondent for the online contemporary art publication, Daily Serving from 2011-2013.

Development and implementation of strategic programming objectives in partnership with staff, board and select committee structures. Management of all existing and forthcoming exhibition programming including revising and updating contracts and schedules, coordinating shipping and travel, securing city permits, equipment needs and rentals, in addition to scheduling and hands-on installation of all exhibitions. Developed stringent guidelines and coordinated production and design of all didactic material including editing, copy editing, development and design of all publications and marketing material (Adobe Creative Suite, Mailchimp, WordPress).  Guided development of content creation and helped insert consistent critical voice. Coordination of all press relations including development of press releases, Akimbo ads, development of consistent press packages and communication with press leading to positive, well informed reviews of exhibitions. Lead role in advising and administering multiple committees and juries including programming committee, annual selections committee and the Ontario Arts Council Exhibition Assistance jury. Preparation of Canada Council project grants, reports and sponsorship packages for upcoming exhibitions.

Programming Assistant

Preparation of Canada Council project grants for upcoming exhibitions. Management of multiple calls for submissions and outgoing press releases regarding gallery projects and exhibitions. Assistance to Administrative Director and Programming Director where needed. Liaised with artists regarding exhibition preparation and installations. Initiated consistent interview program with exhibiting artists. Initiated “Love Your Artist-Run Centre” campaign, to help cultivate an understanding of the unique role of artist-run centres within the cultural landscape and Hamilton community. Designed and organized storage facilities for installation and AV equipment as well as organization’s thirty-six years of archives. Ongoing maintenance and content development for website and social media outlets to generate increased marketing presence. Development, design and branding for projects, exhibitions and promotional materials using Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, and Mailchimp. Managed and delegated tasks to volunteers, while creating a warm and approachable atmosphere within the gallery.

Curatorial Assistant

Short-term contract providing logistical, administrative, research and creative support with regards to programming activities, reporting to the Director. Development and design of didactic support material. Ongoing research and preparation of cultural property designation documents and justifications for incoming acquisitions. Liaised with artists and students regarding exhibition preparation and installations.

Successfully managed finances for organization, including, management of accounts, payroll, operating budgets, remittance and reports (grants, lotteries, CADAC). Effectively managed, delegated tasks and provided support to interns, staff and volunteers where needed, particularly surrounding upcoming exhibitions, press releases, and guidance in the successful pursuance of grants. Personally liaised with granting officers and organizations to effectively research, compose, and follow up on grants. Initiated membership development, community outreach and fundraising campaigns within public and private sectors by creating and designing support materials with demonstrated marketing prowess. Organized and coordinated events, workshops, and exhibition openings for membership, community, and organizational partners.

Created and planned double anniversary celebration on a strict budget in addition to overseeing collection, scripting tours, creating exhibits and designing educational programming and activities. Responsibilities also included delegating tasks and supervising seasonal staff.

Executive Assistant                                                                                                                                         

Assisted Interim Executive Director where needed with general office duties and fundraising. Took a leading role in promoting current exhibitions. Created detailed membership database of current, past and unsolicited organizational donors in addition to setting up reciprocal agreements with other organizations for the benefit of the membership.

Collections Coordinator                                                                                                                                    

Devised and implemented new storage system that maximized existing space on a strict budget while creating safe and effective means of managing and accessing collection. Amended collections management and development policy, created deaccessioning and disposal policy, and amended all collections forms for organization in accordance with best practices. Accessioned and photographed artifacts, performed minor conservation duties, processed incoming loans, and curated and researched exhibitions from the permanent collection. Composed a written assessment and descriptive summary of collection for internal purposes and successful grant proposals.

Assistant to Visitor services coordinator. Created warm and approachable atmosphere in front of house activities while processing admissions and carrying out general receptionist tasks. Provided statistical analysis of revenue and visitors to the gallery for marketing manager.


Multiple short term contracts installing upcoming exhibitions and site specific installations both traveling and from the permanent collection in a professional manner.


Grant Position researching target markets for upcoming exhibitions and programming related to membership development and outreach.

Coordinated and led school tours, scheduled docents, and initiated curriculum for 2006-2007 school year including relevant marketing materials for school groups.

Assisted registrar with collections management and cataloguing. Responsible for condition reporting and database entry. Safe handling and storage procedures for artwork. Translated catalogue texts (French to English).
